چکیده

In this study of facial movements during speech, we found a consistent tendency for two native French speakers and an American English speaker (also reported in Toda et al. [1]): there exist two separate lip gestures for consonants involving ‘labialization’. The first one is a lip protrusion with rounding (narrow lip area) observed for /w/, and the second is a protrusion with a large lip opening observed for postalveolar sibilants /S, Z/. Furthermore, this separation of lip patterns is supported by a factor analysis on the movement data, indicating that these gestures are functionally autonomous. We can relate this fact to the assumed modes of resonance for the consonants: rounding is a requirement for the Helmholtz’ resonance of /w/ being responsible of low F2, whereas protrusion can be intended to lower the frequency of frication noise of postalveolars, enhancing the contrast with their alveolar counterparts. The acoustic/aerodynamic function of the large lip opening for postalveolars remains to be explained.

Test of the movement expansion model: anticipatory vowel lip protrusion and constriction in French and English speakers.

The modeling of anticipatory coarticulation has been the subject of longstanding debates for more than 40 yr. Empirical investigations in the articulatory domain have converged toward two extreme modeling approaches: a maximal anticipation behavior (Look-ahead model) or a fixed pattern (Time-locked model). However, empirical support for any of these models has been hardly conclusive, both withi...

Coarticulatory organization for lip rounding in Turkish and English.

A number of studies, involving English, Swedish, French, and Spanish, have shown that, for sequences of rounded vowels separated by nonlabial consonants, both EMG activity and lip protrusion diminish during the intervocalic consonant interval, producing a "trough" pattern. A two-part study was conducted to (a) compare patterns of protrusion movement (upper and lower lip) and EMG activity (orbic...

The effects of lip rounding on voice onset time production in children acquiring Hungarian

The goal of this project was to examine the effects of lip rounding on the production of voice onset time in voiceless bilabial stops in children acquiring Hungarian as their first language. The duration of voice onset time in stops followed by or embedded between high back rounded phonologically long vowels with prominent lip protrusion are considerably longer. VOT durations in stops followed ...

Modifications of phonetic labial targets in emotive speech: effects of the co-production of speech and emotions

This paper describes how the visual and acoustic characteristics of some Italian phones (/’a/, /b/, /v/) are modified in emotive speech by the expression of joy, surprise, sadness, disgust, anger, and fear. In this research we specifically analyze the interaction between labial configurations, peculiar to each emotion, and the articulatory lip movements of the Italian vowel /’a/ and consonants ...

Domain-initial strengthening on French vowels and phonological contrasts: Evidence from lip articulation and spectral variation

Domain-initial strengthening has primarily been studied for consonants. This paper examines whether vowels also undergo boundary-induced phonetic variation and questions how this effect interacts with phonological contrast in a dense vowel system such as that of French. The labial articulation and the acoustic properties of the 10 French oral vowels /i, e, ɛ, a, y, ø, œ, u, o, ɔ/ are examined i...
